Trakk 03: Midlife Milestone: When Sharing Reading Glasses Becomes Your Superpower
Share
Picture this: I'm running an event I coordinated, trying to look professional despite the fact that my feet are already planning their revolt against these shoes. The keynote speaker takes the stage, shuffles her notes, and then stops.
"I'm so sorry," she says, squinting at the podium computer. "I forgot my reading glasses and I literally cannot see my own presentation."
What happened next was beautiful.
Like some kind of synchronized swimming team, half the audience stood up, glasses in hand, offering to share. Not just one or two people. Half the room. A sea of readers, held high like tiny optical lighthouses.
"I've got 1.25!" "These are 1.5s!" "Try mine, they're stylish!"
I looked around, confused at first. When did everyone get glasses? When did we all become people who travel with backup magnification? And more importantly, when did we start rating our eyewear like wine vintages?
Then I realized I was digging through my purse too, because somewhere in there, between the emergency lip balm and three different phone chargers, I had my own pair of readers that I definitely don't need (except for menus in dim restaurants, tiny print on medicine bottles, and apparently solidarity with keynote speakers).
This is our new superpower, isn't it? We're the generation that shares reading glasses like we used to share mixtapes. We've gone from "Can you record this for me?" to "What's your magnification strength?"
And you know what? I kind of love it. There's something beautifully community-minded about a roomful of people ready to help someone see clearly. We've become the lending library of practical solutions.
